How to Make Your Perfume Last Longer

A few small habits make a real difference to how long a fragrance stays with you. None of them need special products.

1. Start with moisturised skin

Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin than on dry skin. Apply after a shower, once your skin is dry, and use an unscented moisturiser first so it doesn’t compete with the perfume.

2. Apply to warm areas

The sides of the neck, the inner wrists, the inner elbows and behind the ears are warm spots that help a scent radiate. One or two sprays to each of a couple of areas is plenty.

3. Don’t rub it in

Pressing your wrists together after spraying can blur the opening notes. Let the fragrance settle and dry naturally.

4. Try your clothes — carefully

Fabric often holds a scent for longer than skin. Spray from a distance, avoid delicate fabrics such as silk, and test a hidden spot first, as some fragrances can mark light-coloured materials.

5. Choose the right concentration

Richer concentrations and heavier base notes — woods, amber, vanilla, musk, oud — generally last longer. Our guide to eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the differences.

6. Store it well

Heat and light break fragrance down. A bottle kept in a cool, dark place stays truer for longer — see how to store perfume.

7. Carry a top-up

On long days, a travel-size bottle or an all-over spray makes reapplying easy.

Why you stop smelling your own perfume

After a while your nose adapts to a familiar smell and stops registering it — even though people around you still notice it. Before you reapply, ask someone close, or smell a spot you sprayed on your clothes.
